Since Vancouver Island's first Masonic Lodge was formed in Victoria in 1858, Freemasons have made major contributions to Vancouver Island's political, commercial, social and cultural life.

Many Freemasons have been community leaders, serving in municipal, provincial and federal political offices. Many Masons have served in Canada's military; the Canadian Corps in WW1 was commanded by a Vancouver Island Freemason, General Sir Arthur Currie, a member of Vancouver-Quadra Lodge No. 2 in Victoria. Other Freemasons have been prominent in business and commerce. All major Vancouver Island communities have extant buildings designed by Freemasons, built by Freemasons or built for Freemasons. Many Island attractions have a Masonic history; as one example, the world famous Butchart Gardens, 20 kilometres north of Victoria, was started by Robert Pym Butchart, a Freemason.

The Vancouver Island Masonic History Project is an ongoing effort by Temple Lodge, No. 33 in Duncan, B.C. to record the rich Masonic history of Vancouver Island and to document the many contributions Freemasons have made, and continue to make, to Vancouver Island and to Island communities.

The Vancouver Island Masonic History Project is run by Wor. Brother Mark Anderson of Temple Lodge #33 with contributions from other Masons and other Lodges who share the VIMHP's goal of documenting the contributions members of the Craft have made to Vancouver Island.

Any suggestions, from Freemasons or from those outside the Craft, on improving the VIMHP website are most welcome. Photographs of, and biographical information on, deceased Vancouver Island Freemasons would be useful and appreciated. The VIMHP also welcomes your queries and comments but please note that the VIMHP is run by volunteers so there may be some delay in answering your correspondence.
